Next Stage initiative was launched in 2021 to embrace the need for innovation in the world of opera and dance. This project focused on three pillars: Sustainability, Equality, and Digital Transformation.
Next Stage, through a partnership between Opera Europa and FEDORA (the European Circle of Philanthropists of Opera and Ballet), is funded by Creative Europe. FEDORA coordinates the fundraising efforts from both public and private sources while Opera Europa, an expert partner in the field, collaborates with specialists in Sustainability, Inclusivity, and Digital Transformation to drive the initiative.
In June 2022, Next Stage Grants announced five recipients during the Opera Europa Spring Conference. These projects shared a goal of fostering innovation through sustainability, inclusivity, and digital transformation, involving the efforts of 13 cultural organisations across nine European countries.
The recipients of these grants are:
This project, led by the Irish National Opera wants a fusion a fusion of opera and street art, with the creation of an immersive Street Art Opera App. This concept aims to push the boundaries of opera and engage new audiences.
Oper Leipzig’s project focuses on sustainability, aiming to revolutionise the way costumes are made and utilised in opera and dance productions. This effort seeks to lead the way in environmentally responsible costume design and production.
The Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s groundbreaking XR Stage project enters its second phase, taking digital transformation to new heights. This initiative explores the integration of extended reality (XR) technology in the performing arts.
AsLiCo, based in Italy, set as its goal the creation of sensory theatre experiences. These performances are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all, including those with sensory impairments, aiming to break down barriers and promote equality in the arts.
“Opera Matters” project, guided by Poznań Opera House, aims to make opera more relevant and engaging for audiences.
Through these projects, Next Stage wants to ensure a future that is not only artistically rich but also sustainable, inclusive, and digitally dynamic. This collaborative approach to innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity echoes the same values behind Project Butterfly’s project. Together, these efforts are paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for the world of opera and dance, making use of the power of digital transformation.
