Project Butterfly reached its final stage on 20 November with a hybrid event held at the Regione Emilia-Romagna headquarters in Brussels and broadcast online. The recording of the event is available tästä After more than two years of collaboration between the six consortium partners and numerous external institutions, the partners gathered to share the project’s results and lessons learned for a more sustainable opera sector.
Lorenza Badiello, Head of the Emilia‑Romagna Region Office in Brussels, opened the event with a welcome to the public. Stefano Bonaccini, MEP and former President of the Emilia‑Romagna Region, delivered the opening remarks. Aldo Sisillo, Artistic Director of Teatro Comunale di Modena, gave a concise recap of the project’s journey — from the kick-off, the call for composers, workshops with schools and two composer residencies, through to the performances in Modena, Gdańsk and Helsinki — and presented a Project Insight video. Celia Grau, Sustainability & Special Projects Manager at Opera Europa, offered insights into sustainable opera practices and the sector’s path ahead. Project results and best practices were presented by Ville Salonen (Managing Director, Opera Box) and Romuald Wicza‑Pokojski (General Manager, Opera Bałtycka). An AI avatar demo was presented by Andy Probst, Creative Director and General Manager, Heimspiel GmBH. The conclusion segment was led by Lisa Sentimenti, Project Manager at AESS, and the formal programme concluded with a networking lunch that brought partners and participants together.
The event marked an important milestone for Project Butterfly and provided concrete examples and tools to inspire the opera community toward more sustainable production models.

After three years of innovative work, the EU co-funded Project Butterfly – Boosting environmental awareness in opera creation is preparing for its Final Event in Brussels. The event marks an important milestone in a project that has reimagined opera through the lens of sustainability.
Led by Teatro Comunale di Modena in partnership with Opera Box (Finland), Baltic Opera (Poland), AESS Modena, Heimspiel (Germany), and GOPA Com. (Belgium), Project Butterfly has explored every stage of opera creation and production. From engaging high school students in Italy, Finland, and Poland in the co-creation of the opera’s storyline, to commissioning three original acts on the themes of water, land, and air, the project has combined artistic excellence with environmentally conscious practices.
The opera’s production embraced innovative approaches – from sets built with recycled and reusable materials to the use of advanced digital technologies and AI-generated visuals. Audiences were invited to take part through initiatives such as the Bike to Theatre app, rewarding sustainable travel, and interactive AI tools designed to spark conversations about opera and climate action.
The Final Event will bring together representatives of partner theatres, sustainability experts, and European stakeholders to reflect on the results achieved, exchange best practices, and look ahead at how the performing arts sector can further integrate sustainability into its future.
