Opera's 2nd Residency in Modena: Towards the final production

From October 16th to 20th, the Teatro Pavarotti-Freni in Modena hosted the second residency of Project Butterfly, a pivotal phase as composers, librettists, and partners gathered to finalize our eco-conscious opera. The residency’s focus was on aligning every production detail with Project Butterfly’s sustainability goals, moving the team closer to the opera’s premiere and European tour.

The core activities began on October 17th, when composers from Italy, Finland, and Poland presented their compositions, providing insights and previews for the team. This creative exchange set the tone for the following session, where the group discussed production timelines, planned online rehearsals, enhancing the opera’s immersive potential.

A highlight came when students from Modena’s Selmi High School—who developed the opera’s storyline—met with librettist Vincenzo De Vivo and composer Marco Attura. This session allowed students to engage with the artists shaping their story, deepening the educational and creative impact of the project.

In the following days, the team collaborated on stage set design, blending digital and material elements, and explored costume concepts with Matteo Mazzoni, Joanna Borkowska, and Heimspiel. The program included audience engagement discussions, crowdfunding strategies, and an evening performance of Mosè in Egitto at the Teatro Comunale.

This residency marked an essential step forward, as Project Butterfly merges artistry with sustainability. Stay tuned as the project redefines opera for today’s world!
